When mental illness, including addiction, strikes a child, the entire family is affected. Treatment options are available for the patient, but parents, especially if the child is 18 or older, are typically on their own. To honor the courage and generosity of Millicent Monks (author of Songs of Three Islands, A Memoir: A Personal Tale of Motherhood and Mental Illness in an Iconic American Family), in sharing her story, a group of parents of children with mental illness is pleased to announce the formation of a parent support group called "Milly's Place." The support group will meet the first and third Wednesday of each month from 7 - 9 pm. The location is the offices of Paula Banks Consulting LLC/Two Lights Home Care, 337 Ocean House Road, (Route 77), Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Participation in the Milly's Place Support Group is free. Please note that the support group will be canceled on days the Cape Elizabeth school system is closed due to weather. "Anyone who has been through such moments will know, and those who have not cannot know the vulnerability, the loss of innocence, the recognition of our inability to control our lives to protect our children. I know what it is to stand powerless before the gods, to see a child I love hurt by forces I can neither name nor control." ~ Helen Featherstone
